CAPE GIRARDEAU COUNTY, MO (KFVS) -

The Cape Girardeau teenager who admitted  assaulting her neighbor while yelling homosexual slurs at her back in July will spend the next five years on probation.

Judge William Syler gave 17-year-old Mercedes Ayers that probation term in a Jackson courtroom Monday morning.

Ayers pleaded guilty on October 1, 2012 to a charge of assault motivated by discrimination in connection with an attack on Jeanna Terry.

After that plea, Terry told Heartland News she was happy the case did not have to go to trial and she hopes Ayers can turn her life around.

If Ayers completes the five year probation term, she will not have a criminal record.
