CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

The 7th Annual Empty Bowls event benefiting the Salvation Army fighting hunger was held in Cape Girardeau on Sunday.

Over 200 people came paid $12 to purchase of a hand made bowl.  Free soup was provided by 35 Southeast Missouri State University students.

The purpose of the bowls are to remind people that there are always people that go hungry.

Organizers say 100 percent of the money raised goes towards the Salvation Army helping provide funds to buy food and supply meals to the public every month.

There's been $35,000 raised in past seven years.

It's a student project in which it is to expose them to the real world and experience the needs of the people.

There were 600 bowls made for three events including for the Osage Craft Fair on November 17-18. And, for the Arts Council in October, when they had a table set up and sold bowls. Today's event is considered the biggest of the three.

Volunteers from around the community including elementary school kids painted the bowls to make each one unique.

Nearly $5300 was made last year and $5000 is the goal this year. Organizers expect to meet that goal.
