JACKSON COUNTY, IL (KFVS) -
A police officer and another person were injured in a car crash in Carbondale.
According to Trooper David Sneed with Illinois State Police, the crash happened shortly after 7 a.m. in the eastbound lanes of Route 13 between Giant City and Reed Station Roads.
Sneed says a small SUV driven by Michele M. Martin, 26, of Carbondale, rear ended a Carbondale Police cruiser in the passing lane.
A dump truck, driven by Richard P. Harms, 64, of Balwin, in the next lane, tried to avoid hitting the SUV and instead slid sideways and crashed into a bridge.
The SUV rolled onto its top in driving lane before striking the bridge. The bridge sustained minor damage, according to ISP.
The police officer and the driver of the SUV sustained minor injuries in the crash.
Sneed says shortly after 8 a.m. the wreck was cleaned up and traffic was flowing normally again.
Michelle Martin was charged with failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.
The name of the Carbondale Police Officer was not released.
