(CNN) - According to a new study in the latest edition of the journal Circulation, smoking bans are saving lives.

The research looked at the number of hospitalizations and deaths for respiratory and other diseases. It then compared the stats before smoke-free laws were put into place and after.

The results showed a quick turnaround. Just two years after smoke-free legislation was enacted, hospital admissions dropped.

Hospitalizations for heart attacks fell by an average of 15 percent while hospital stays for respiratory disease fell by 24 percent.

The study concluded that the more comprehensive the law, the greater the change.
