SOUTHERN ILLINOIS (KFVS) -

An overnight high speed police chase traveled through five southern Illinois counties and covered more than 50 miles.

According to the Union County Sheriff's Office, it all started in the early morning hours Saturday in Franklin County when a West City Police officer tried to make a traffic stop.

Instead of stopping, deputies say the driver took off. The vehicle led police south on interstate 57 at speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour.

Williamson County deputies joined in the chase at the county line. The high-speed pursuit passed briefly through Johnson County and into Union County.

In Union County deputies say they deployed spike strips which deflated at least one tire, but that only slowed the runaway car.

According to deputies, the chase finally ended just over the line in Pulaski County line when the car hit the interstate median.

The driver and a female passenger had some minor injuries and were taken to a hospital for treatment.

The names of the suspects have not been released pending formal charges.
