With a fearsome superstorm threatening the US Eastern Seaboard, several governors are declaring states of emergency and urging coastal residents to move inland.

The American Red Cross is sending 2 Carbondale volunteers and equipment to aid in Hurricane Sandy relief efforts.

As it moves inland, forecasters say Sandy will run into two winter weather systems, potentially creating one huge storm. An 800-mile wide swath of the country could see 50 mph winds.

Police say a southern Illinois man faces arson and other charges after reportedly dousing his wife with an accelerant and setting fire to a building.

Meanwhile, in a separate case, a trial for a southern Illinois man accused of dousing his girlfriend with chemicals and setting her on fire has been pushed back into next year.

Deputies say a Marble Hill man is accused of threatening several people with a gun and also trying to run over people with his truck.
