Man killed in Pope County crash

An Elizabethtown man was killed in a crash in Pope County, Illinois.

According to Illinois State Police, it happened around 5:05 p.m. Friday on IL Route 34, 1/2 mile north of Herod.

Crash investigators say Lawrence Thornton, 21, of Elizabethtown was pronounced dead at the scene by the Pope County Coroner.

Troopers say Thornton was southbound in his Dodge Caravan on IL 34, tried to pass a car and drove into the path of a tractor-trailer striking it head on.

The driver of the tractor-trailer, Bradley Walker, 37, of Harrisburg was taken to Harrisburg Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

An investigation by State Police is ongoing.
