Deputies investigate church AC thefts

WILLIAMSON COUNTY, IL (KFVS) -

Deputies in Williamson County are on the lookout for thieves who stole from area churches.

The first theft was reported Monday. Someone stole the air conditioning units from a church near Creal Springs.

Tuesday two more churches in Lake of Egypt and Corinth reported their A. C. units missing.

Sheriff Bennie Vick says in all thieves made off with seven central air conditioners from three rural churches.

"To replace them, it would probably cost $3000 to $4000 each," said Sheriff Vick. "Thieves take them and scrap them and might get $40 or $50 for the copper and aluminum from the units. So they're doing a tremendous amount of damage and getting very little for it."

Sheriff Vick says the churches hit so far were all in very rural settings.

That's why he's asking residents to keep an eye out and report any suspicious activity near rural churches to the Williamson county sheriff's office at (618) 997-6541.
