Herrin house destroyed by vandals

HERRIN, IL (KFVS) -

A Herrin home was destroyed by vandals after police say they kicked in a backdoor and went on destructive rampage.

And for the owner of the house at 804 East Van Buren, he's out more than $20,000 to repair all the damage inside the home.

Cecil Emery had just finished spending more than $9,000 renovating the home and getting it ready for a renter to move in.

"We basically reconstructed the whole inside of the house. We replaced all the drywall, all the doors, we painted and put in new carpet," said Emery. " We did a lot of work."

And now all that work is for not, because nobody can live in the house at this time.

"Unfortunately I listed the house in the paper for rent. And I had someone who was interested in moving. And when I we came over here to look at the house we walked into complete destruction," said Emery.

Virtually every wall inside the home has been kicked or punched full of holes. And there is pink paint slung and spread throughout the house.

"For someone to come in and do this much damage, this is not just some vandal breaking a window. They came in and literally destroyed this house," said Emery.

And they didn't spare their destructive rage on the bathroom fixtures, they're busted to pieces and the mirror scratched beyond repair.

Emery believes that whoever did the damage to the inside of the home, spent several hours in the house doing more than tearing it up.

"Absolutely there are cigarette packages, there are condom packages, they left drink bottles in here. Someone wasn't here for a short period of time, they were here for hours."

Emery is now offering a $1,000 reward to anyone with information that leads to the arrest of the person or persons responsible for destroying his house.

And the Herrin Police Department is asking anyone with information about the crime to contact them, too.
