Heartland departments take part in national drug 'take-back' day

CAPE GIRARDEAU COUNTY, MO (KFVS) -

Time to clean out the cabinets of expired, unused and unwanted prescription medications.

The nation's Drug Enforcement Agency is sponsoring a "Drug Take-Back Day" on Saturday Sept. 29.

Police departments across the Heartland are taking part, hosting Take-Back events.

Officers with the Cape Girardeau and Jackson police departments will be taking medications from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at West Park Mall in Cape Girardeau.

There will also be a drop off location in Carbondale from 10 a.m. -2 p.m. at 601 S. University, according to Attorney General Lisa Madigan.

"You can come out with your prescription pills that are either expired or you don't use and drop them off no questions asked," Lt. Rick Price of the Cape Girardeau police department said. "We've got it set up where you don't even have to get it out of your car, you just pull up and we'll take them from you," he added.

The goal is to get prescription medications out of the hands to prevent accidents or drug abuse.
