Lightning strike lights fire at Coulterville home

COULTERVILLE, IL (KFVS) -

Two people are safe, but their home is a total loss after an early morning house fire.

Fire crews in Coulterville tell Heartland News around 4 a.m. Wednesday morning lightning struck the home at 977 Goldenrod Road in rural Perry County.

Crews say the lightning strike damaged the home's electrical box and sparks started to smolder inside the walls.

Around 8 a.m. the homeowner smelled smoke and called 911.

Firefighters were able to get the homeowner and her 99-year-old father out safely.

Firefighters say the home's older construction made it tough to get water to the flames inside the walls. They brought in heavy machinery to take down the walls to be able to put out hot spots.

The home is considered a loss.
