SIU dorm evacuated after bomb threat

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - Students in three residence halls at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale were evacuated after a bomb threat Thursday night.

The bomb threat was received through the mail. This is the second threat through the mail in a week.

Police investigated the scene, and nothing suspicious was found.  Hundreds of students were allowed back into the dorm around 1 a.m.  The were out of the dorms for two hours.

According to a statement released from the SIU Department of Public Safety, the university was told of a bomb threat in the Brush Towers residence halls. All three Brush towers were evacuated. Students were sent to the Recreation Center, Student Center, and Morris Library while the building was inspected.

"An R.A. Came to the door and said we needed to pack a few things and get out because there was a bomb threat," said Brush Towers resident Frankie Perricone. So we had to take the stairs from the 16th floor all the way down."

The campus police was assisted by K9 bomb-sniffing dog.  Later, SIU posted on their Twitter and Facebook pages that nothing was found and students were allowed to return to the building.

"I want to thank everyone who played a role in the overnight evacuation of Brush Towers," said Chancellor Rita Cheng in a statement to the media. "Any threat against the University requires the need to take all necessary precautions. The response from our Department of Public Safety and Housing staff played a key role in ensuring a smooth evacuation and eventual return of the residents to their rooms. I also want to commend the students for their calm and orderly exit from Brush Towers at a time when many were sleeping or studying. Our number one priority is the safety of our students. It is a commitment that is shared by the entire faculty and staff at SIU."

Classes for Friday will not be affected.

The university is taking this threat very seriously. The person/s responsible will* face federal charges because it was sent the threat through the post office.

The FBI is investigating because the threats came through the mail, and whoever sent them will face federal charges.
