East Perry Community Fair has one of the biggest cattle shows - KFVS12 News & Weather Cape Girardeau, Carbondale, Poplar Bluff

East Perry Community Fair has one of the biggest cattle shows in Mo.

For the last 18 years, Brent Versemann has brought his cattle to show at the East Perry Community Fair in Altenburg.

For the first time this year, he'll show under a building, not a tent.

"This is going to help immensely," said Versemann.

In the past, exhibitors, like Versemann, have shown their stock in rain and lots of mud. Now, gravel crunches under their feet as they show under brand new facilities. Over the last few years, the beef cattle numbers have doubled, going from 100 cattle to 200.

Organizers and sponsors took note. They built four brand new buildings now known as the, "Beef Complex."

"I'd say facility-wise, we rank between anything in the state," said Beef Superintendent Greg Jung.

"We used to show in mud down at tents. We were running out of space. Now, no matter the environment outside, we're going to show here. That helps a lot," said Versemann.

"It's the icing on the cake now," added Jung.

Keep in mind, only about 1500 people make up the area known as East Perry County. So, what does it take for a community that size to end up with one of the largest beef cattle shows in the state and new facilities? Fair organizers say it's planning for the future and remembering traditions of the past.

"If you don't add the extra stuff, you won't have new people coming in," pointed out Greg Krauss, Fair BoardpPresident.

"The friendly atmosphere is the big thing. Plus, the SEMO Fair was last week, so you have what we call 'show fever'," said Versemann.

"It's the last hurrah before the hum-drum of winter," said Jung.

Another new feature: the 200 head of cattle will now be on display Friday night, instead of just Saturday, in the brand new facilities.  Learn more about the fair at the East Perry Community Fair Facebook page.
