Volunteers wanted for National Public Lands Day

DONIPHAN, MO (KFVS) -

A river cleanup day on the Eleven Point National Wild and Scenic River will be the focus of a National Public Lands Day event on Saturday, Sept. 29.

The event is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and involves a trash cleanup of the National Wild and Scenic River and associated recreation sites adjacent to the river from Greer Crossing on Highway 19 to the Riverton East Access on Highway 160.

National Public Lands Day is the nation's largest hands-on volunteer effort to improve and enhance public lands. The focus of National Public Lands Day is to install a sense of shared stewardship and educate the public about the importance of natural resources.

A limited number of canoes are being provided free of charge to volunteers by Eleven Point River outfitter and guide operators and volunteers are asked to gather at Mark Twain National Forest Greer Springs Day Use Area or the Riverton East Access for the cleanup.

Hotdogs and hamburgers will be provided for volunteers after the cleanup, courtesy of Eleven Point River outfitters and guides.

All volunteers will also receive a coupon for a "fee-free" day at any site managed by the USDA Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, National Park Service, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers or U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Mark Twain National Forest, and many other federal land management agencies, will be offering a fee-free day Saturday, September 29, 2012. No fees will also be charged for day use on Saturday and Sunday, September 29-30 at areas operated by the Forest, and no fees will be charged for camping in non-reserved sites at areas operated by the Forest on Friday and Saturday night, September 28-29, 2012. All reservation fees still apply; motorized trail permits and sites operated by concessionaires will still require full fee payment.

To volunteer and reserve a canoe or to get more information about the cleanup, contact Angelica Cacho at Mark Twain National Forest's Eleven Point Ranger District office at 573-966-2153 or Bill Paxton at 573-429-5193 or visit www.publiclandsday.org.
