Sport boat manufacturer to halt production, impacts 350 jobs

A sport boat manufacturer in Benton, Illinois will not resume production for the 2013 season.

Bombardier Recreational Products, Inc. (BRP) announced it will exit the sport boat business in the coming months citing the decline in global sales in the marine industry.

BRP designs, develops, manufactures, distributes, and markets motorized recreational vehicles.

Employees have been off since June with normal, seasonal layoffs for the summer for the sport boating business.

Mike Schroder, a manager at BRP in Benton, says employees were notified Friday. He says this will impact around 350 jobs around the country. A majority of those employees work in the Benton, Illinois office.

Schroder says the sport boat business has been down since 2007.

All impacted employees will receive a good transition package, according to the company.

BRP president and CEO Jose Boisjoli said in a press release that the company looked for a buyer for the sport boat business, but was unsuccessful.

BRP entered the boat manufacturing business in 1994 and purchased the assets of Celebrity Boats in 1995 when if moved its facility to Benton, Illinois.

BRP will continue to provide parts and honor warranties for its customers.

The company employees more than 6,000 people and has manufacturing facilities in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Finland, and Austria.
