JACKSON COUNTY, IL (KFVS) -

A search party found a hiker Sunday who was reported missing in the Little Grand Canyon Recreation Area in Jackson County, Illinois.

According to the sheriff's office, deputies found a car at the Little Grand Canyon Recreation Area around closing time at 11 p.m. Saturday.

Deputies made contact with the car's owners and were told a 20-year-old Murphysboro man last used the vehicle.

On Sunday, the sheriff's office got a call from the man's family saying he had not returned home.

Deputies say it was not known at that time if he was in the Little Grand Canyon Recreation Area.

Authorities and emergency crews formed a search party and found the hiker around 10 a.m.

He did not have a phone. And wasn't planning to spend the night.

He was taken to a Murphysboro hospital for precautionary reasons.

The Jackson County Sheriff's Department recommends that anyone hiking the Little Grand Canyon area say on the main trail, bring plenty of food, water and a cell phone.

The search party was made up of the Jackson County Sheriff's Office, Illinois Department of Natural Resources, Murphysboro-Pomona-Somerset Township Fire Department and the Jackson County Ambulance District.
