Noranda and Union ratify new contract

NEW MADRID COUNTY, MO (KFVS) -

Workers at the Noranda Aluminum Smelter in New Madrid will not be walking the picket lines.

Friday evening members of the United Steelworkers Union ratified a new five year contract.

Noranda and union workers previously agreed to extend the collective bargaining agreement to September 7th.   They said that would give union leaders a chance to bring Noranda's proposed contract to a vote.

Before that the contract was set to expire on August 31st.

"This agreement is the product of many weeks of hard work by both the Noranda and USW negotiating teams," said Frank Davis, Noranda Aluminum plant manager.

"It achieves Noranda's goal of rewarding employees for their hard work, making the plant a safer place, while accomplishing changes that are needed for Noranda to be sustainable for the future,"  Davis added.

The new contract covers about 780 employees at the company's New Madrid plant.
