Remember safety when grilling on Labor Day

Today is the last big holiday of the summer and that means cookouts.

To make sure they stay fun and enjoyable, it's important to keep basic grilling safety in mind.

The Owensboro, Ky. Fire Department says you might want to think about tweaking basic safety rules today.

That includes not bringing grills or other barbeque equipment inside or under a garage if it does start raining.

They're designed to only be used outside.

If they're brought inside, carbon monoxide and other deadly gasses can harm you and your family.

"Make sure that you're in attendance when you're cooking. Whether it's inside or if you're using a grill outside that you don't leave that alone," said Battalion Chief Steve Leonard. "And that's the biggest mistake we see. We respond to a lot of cooking related fires inside and outside."

The fire department also says it's important to have a kid-free zone around any cooking area, since equipment can still cause injuries even after it's off.
