Mississippi River flows backwards during Hurricane

NEW ORLEANS, LA (KFVS) -

Hurricane Isaac's wind and storm surge actually forced the Mississippi River to flow backwards on Wednesday.

Scientists with the U.S. Geological Survey say the river flowed backwards for almost 24 hours.

Isaac's storm surge caused the river to rise as much as eight feet at Baton Rouge, which is upstream from New Orleans.

USGS officials say the reverse flows are rare, but are an example of how dangerous some storms can be.
