CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

A website gives schools a quality rating, and two Cape Girardeau Schools get high marks.

School Digger . com states its mission is to empower parents to make informed choices when choosing a school for their child. So, it ranks schools based on 20 years of enrollment data, several years of test scores, crime data, and real estate data.

With that information, Alma Schrader Elementary School got a four out of five star ranking, while Blanchard Elementary School received a five-star rating.

Alma Schrader Principal Ruth Ann Orr told Heartland News she appreciates that data, and wants to work for a five star rating next time.

Thank you, it's what the Blanchard Elementary School community said about its five star rating on SchoolDigger.com.

"We feel like we work so hard and our kids work so hard, and they deserve that recognition," said Blanchard 4th Grade Teacher Kristi Pennington.

"It made it worth it and it made you want to come back and work even harder," said Blanchard 3rd Grade Teacher Amber Walker.

"We work so hard, and we're so determined that all the kids are going to learn, and it paid off," said Blanchard Principal Barbara Kohlfeld.

Blanchard teachers and staff tell me the secret to their success, is positive behavior.

"They're taught very young that the number one part of being at school is you have to be well behaved," said Pennington.

"We can come in and teach, we don't have to manage behavior," said Walker.

"Our children are extremely well behaved, and they want to learn, which makes them teachable," said Kohlfeld.

The website has ranked schools since 2006, and Blanchard has made some big improvements from their first ranking.

In 2006, the website ranked Blanchard 714th out of 1,085 Elementary Schools in Missouri. In 2012, the school ranked 52nd out of 1,051 Missouri Elementary Schools.

"We care, we inspire, we support, we motivate, we encourage," said Kohlfeld.

One of the things the website uses to give schools its ranking, its test scores, and Blanchard teachers said it's all about the preparation.

"We start talking about the MAP test the moment they enter 3rd grade, because you have to start preparing now," said Walker.

"After all that preparation they can't wait to take it, because they feel very confident that they're going to do well," said Kohlfeld.

"They know every year what's expected of them is going to continue on into the next year, and they have to come to each grade ready to go," said Pennington.

Students and teachers had a minor set back last year when the school caught fire. But Principal Kohlfeld said they didn't skip a beat, and still held their high standards.

"A very high priority focus, a laser like focus on learning," said Kohlfeld.

"There's so much support from leadership to co workers, parents are involved, it's a wonderful place to work," said Walker.

Even with the five star ranking, Kohlfeld said they're saying ‘thank you,' and getting right back to work.

"Our job is never done, so this year we're starting all over and we just got to keep going at it," said Kohlfeld.
