Poplar Bluff School Dist. introduces new MacBooks, wireless internet

POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KFVS) -

The Poplar Bluff School District R-1 is getting 200 MacBooks for the 5th and 6th graders.

Along with the computers, the school district will be installing wireless throughout the Elementary building. The district is hoping it will be ready by next school year. They say the Junior High School building already has wireless service in place and 150 MacBooks. They hope they will be in the students' hands as early as November of this year.

The school district says Junior High teachers have already started training on them and some lesson plans have already been developed. The MacBooks will be on a two-week rotation used in the classrooms by the teachers and students to enhance learning with the latest technology.

According to the school district, the purpose of buying the computers is to give all students an opportunity to have the latest resources at their fingertips and introduce them in a new way for teachers to connect with the students using the latest tools that textbooks can't offer. School officials feel this will engage more kids and be more active in wanting to learn.

The school officials say they can even personalize material with students that need help with areas of improvement in the classroom. After attending a seminar at a school in North Carolina in which they used similar technology, school officials found that the technology they used helped student grades, attendance and graduation rates.

They say they are introducing them to the Elementary and Junior High Schools first because they want to connect with students early and then progress from there and introduce them into high school levels down the line.
