It happened about 9:30 a.m. when a private contractor working to install fiber optic line hit a gas line at the intersection of Lexington and Rampart. A ruptured gas line shut down Lexington Avenue in Cape Girardeau Tuesday morning.

It happened about 9:30 a.m. when a private contractor working to install fiber optic line hit a gas line at the intersection of Lexington and Rampart.

Lexington is shut down in a two block area on the east and west side of Rampart.

Ameren UE is on the scene working to repair the gas line.

The area around the gas leak was evacuated. However, no homes had to be evacuated.

Police and firefighters are on the scene.
