NEW MADRID, MO (KFVS) -

Officials are investigating a suspicious fire that destroyed an abandoned church in New Madrid on Sunday.

New Madrid Assistant Fire Chief Steven Lewis says the fire started around 7 p.m. and firefighters from New Madrid and Lilbourn Fire Departments fought the blaze for over five and a half hours.

The church was a total loss and the fire also caused minor damage to a nearby shed. Lewis says he believes the church had been vacant for at least a decade.

Officials are not sure how the fire started, but feel that it is suspicious due to the fact there was no electric to the building.

The New Madrid police chief says they do have a person of interest.

Anyone with information regarding the fire or may have seen any suspicious activity in the area around the time of the incident are asked to alert authorities.
