State Fair taking precautions against 'swine flu'

The Du Quoin State Fair is underway and one of the attractions is the livestock stable.  Keeping all the animals clean is a top priority for fair organizers.

An epidemiologist from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says they're seeing a new strain of the H3N2 flu, and that many of the cases are the result of human-to-pig contact at fairs.

THE CDC reports that the H3-N2 has been seen in at least four states including Illinois.

Assistant Fair Manager Norm Hill says his crew is aware of the situation and they are taking all necessary precautions.

"We're doing everything we always do," said Hill. "We feel confident in  our procedures. We have veterinarians on board 24/7. The animals are inspected before they get here. And they're inspected while they're here. Even at night, if they started coughing or having a fever, they'll take action. We've not seen any of that."

Hill says the best advice he can offer is to always wash your hands after contact with animals.
