United Way's 'Read to Succeed' program needs volunteers

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

The Read to Succeed Program is expanding and needs volunteers due to the support of the United Way of Southeast Missouri and Graces Women's Leadership Council.

About 40 volunteers showed up Saturday at the Cape Girardeau Library for a training class.

Organizers say the Read to Succeed Program has expanded from two to all five elementary schools this fall in the Cape Girardeau Public School District.

Last year, organizers say they helped out around 150 children. This year they will be serving over 200 children. Volunteers work with children and develop a solid foundation in their reading skills.

There is a second training that will be held on September 15 from 9:30-11:30 a.m. at the Cape Girardeau Public School Board Office.
