NEW MADRID COUNTY, MO (KFVS) -

The deadline for the steel workers union and the Noranda Aluminum to agree on a new contract is coming up at the end of August.

Noranda Plant Manager Frank Davis released this statement:

At Noranda, we deeply value our New Madrid associates, their families, and the community.  We currently are in negotiations with the union for a new collective bargaining agreement.

As the existing agreement will end on August 31, the company is committed to work in good faith with the union leadership to secure a new agreement.

Holly Teal's husband works at the plant. She says the family is preparing for a strike by cutting unnecessary expenses.

"You have to look at everything," Teal said. "All of your bills."

The union did not have any comment at this point.

A deal must be met by August 31 at midnight.
