Nuclear Regulatory Commission to meet with Metropolis company

METROPOLIS, IL (KFVS) -

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff has scheduled a pre-decisional enforcement conference with officials of Honeywell Metropolis Works of Metropolis, IL.

The meeting will take place Monday, August 27 at the NRC offices in Atlanta and is open to the public.  Anyone interested in attending the meeting or participating in the meeting by phone can contact NRC's Omar Lopez at 404-997-4703 or omarlopez@nrc.gov or Richard Gibson at 404-997-4718 or richardgibson@nrc.gov.

The meeting will begin at 10:30 a.m. Eastern.

The purpose of the conference is to discuss apparent violations associated with Honeywell's failure to identify the kinds of accidents that significant earthquakes or tornadoes might cause.

Those accidents could result in the release of large amounts of uranium hexafluoride into the environment.

Later the same day, NRC officials and Honeywell staff will meet to discuss licensing issues associated with modifications the company plans to make to the facility.  The second meeting is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. Eastern.

Anyone interested in participating in that meeting in person or by phone should contact the NRC's Breeda Reilly at 301-492-3110 or breedareilly@nrc.gov.

No decision on enforcement action will be made at the meeting.  NRC officials will review information presented by Honeywell and reach a decision at a later date.

More information on the issue is available at the NRC website at www.nrc.gov/reading-rm/adams/html.  The number to access the document is ML12222A163.
