It's the talker story of the day. Congressman Todd Akin says he was wrong in claiming that women's bodies are able to prevent pregnancies in "a legitimate rape" situation and that conception is rare in such cases. However, the Missouri Republican Senate candidate says he will continue to run for a U.S. Senate seat despite calls for him to step down. Incumbent Sen. Claire McCaskill was in the Heartland today campaigning and had some remarks about Akin's statement. Christy Millweard tells us what she said tonight on Heartland News at 9 and 10.

The Carter County Sheriff's Office is investigating an attempted kidnapping in Van Buren. Holly Brantley talked with people in town who are keeping a close eye out for a suspected vehicle.

A grand jury returned indictments against two Union County women who are accused of contributing to a man's death, then hindering the investigation.

Charges are pending against a Benton, Ky. man who police say fled the scene of a DUI crash. His wife faces charges of DUI and wanton endangerment. Four children were in the van when the crash happened.

Multiple fire departments fought a business fire in Miner this afternoon.

Separate crashes at Missouri State Fair Sunday night injured several people, including bystanders, authorities said.

It's back to the books for many college students today. Southeast Missouri State University, Southern Illinois University, Three Rivers College and others began their Fall 2012 semester.

Scooters are now on many Southeast Missouri State University students back-to-school lists. A scooter store owner in Cape Girardeau says the demand is so high, he can't keep scooters in stock.

A California farm has recalled romaine lettuce sold in 19 states that may have been contaminated with E. coli bacteria.

The Illinois Department of Corrections has started a sustainability initiative that includes planting gardens on prison grounds which have yielded enough produce to assist local food banks.
