Jack Bullock from Mt. Vernon, Illinois wrote in last week to discuss the election. Here is what he had to say:
"With this being an election year unemployment has once again came into focus. But unemployment isn't a problem in this country and it hasn't been since the Great Depression. According to statistics, nation-wide the unemployment rate hovers around 10 percent. Which means that 9-of-10 Americans, who are able and willing to work physically and mentally, are employed. If you are successful 9-out-of-10 times in most things in life, you are great. But the problem in America isn't the lack of jobs, it is the lack of pay for the jobs that are available. Of those 9-out-of-10 employed Americans, nearly seven of them are making minimum wage or slightly above. That is the problem. It isn't the lack of jobs, it is the lack of wages of those jobs. On top of that, most companies no longer hire full-time people. By hiring part-time employees, they don't have to give out benefits. Until companies start paying their employees a living wage, there will always be people needing welfare for help. The Bush Tax Cuts, meant to trickle down into more jobs and higher wages, pay for raises for corporate CEO's. Continuing to vote for conservatives in our elections will keep wages low."
