Several Ill. counties receive emergency FEMA food and shelter grants

WASHINGTON (KFVS) -

U.S. Congressman Jerry Costello (D-IL) announced Thursday that several southern Illinois counties have received funds through the Emergency Food and Shelter program of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. 

The funds will be used to help meet the needs of the homeless and hungry in the region.

"This program is a part of our social safety net," said Costello.  "These funds help people with the basic needs of living, which is the first step to self-sufficiency."

The counties and amounts are as follows:

Alexander County, $3,900; Franklin County, $20,131; Jackson County, $24,555; Perry County,   $10,145; Pulaski County, $2,969; Union County, $9,393 and Williamson County, $30,355.
