New SIU students move in on campus

It was a hectic Thursday on SIU's campus as new and transfer students moved in.

University housing officials say after years of perfecting the system, they've planned out everything; from where vehicles enter the east side of campus down to what time each student can move in.

Once families arrive on campus they find plenty of help with the heavy lifting.

"They unload their car, and depending on which high rise they live in there are numbers for the elevators and so you get a number for the elevator and when your number is called volunteers swoop in and help carry it all to the elevators and help you get it up to your room," said Beth Scully, SIU's associate director of housing.

The push got underway Thursday morning at 7 a.m. and wraps up at 7 p.m.

Move-in times at the towers were staggered based on what floor a student will live on. SIU housing officials say that makes it go quicker, and be less chaotic. Parents say it makes for a low-stress move.

"they have the young people helping which is great because then you know you're not going to have to haul it all up yourself," said Connie Kloster, a mother of a new SIU transfer student.

All that work is followed by plenty of fun. SIU has a week full of welcome events for students to get to know one another and settle into campus life.

Fall classes will start Monday.
