Safer and healthier schools in Illinois

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - The days of summer are winding down for millions of kids in Illinois.

This next week marks the beginning of a new school year. And the start to some changes for schools too.

Now, all public schools and nonpublic schools are going to have to report their students immunization and health exam statistics.

It's all part of Illinois House Bill 5013, that Governor Pat Quinn signed into law on Wednesday.

"I think that it's a good law, that way we know exactly what everybody's immunization records are," said Ronald Brandy of Carbondale. "So long as the privacy of the individuals are kept in context. And everybody is able to keep their medical records safe and secure."

Under the new law, schools are not required to post any personal information about which students have, or have not got their immunizations up to date. It will just be statistical information for anyone to look at, in order to know what's going on with a particular school.

"I think it will be helpful," said Mamta Rhani of Carbondale. "Because if your kid gets sick then you can go online and check in your school to see what kind of immunization kids didn't have."

The information is already posted on the Illinois State Board of Education website. But now it's going to be easier for parents and anyone else to find too.

"I think it's a good thing," said Marcie Buckles of Carbondale. "I'm not sure it would be effective unless you knew who those students were. And make sure that they got their immunizations up to date, to make sure your child was protected."

According to the ISBE, there were more than 60,000 students in the state who were not in compliance with immunization and other health exam mandates in the 2010-11 school year.
