Auction brings international visitors to Sikeston

People from all across the world came looking for a bargain. People from all across the world came looking for a bargain.
SIKESTON, MO (KFVS) -

The Dewitt Auction Company in Sikeston had an international feel to it Monday. People from all across the world came looking for a bargain.

"If the drought means prices are lower, better for us," said Enrique Cadenas, a farmer from Uruguay.

That wasn't the case though. Experts say with the increase in commodity prices, farmers aren't hurting as bad.

Corn, for example, hit $4.50 at one point. Now, it's more than $8.

"Commodity prices are real high right now," David Bergen, another international farmer, said. "Like I told one of my buddies the other day, even if you get half the crop you usually get, you're still going to come out on it."

He says it's too early to get that deal many international farmers wanted.

"Six months down the line to one year down the line, that's when people will realize they don't have the cash to make the returns," Bergen said.

So international farmers like the farmers here in the Heartland have to pay close to regular price for now.
