Cape Girardeau applies for grant to help with future flooding

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

The city of Cape Girardeau applies for grant money to help eliminate future flooding problems.

According to City Manager Scott Meyer, early this week Cape Girardeau submitted an application for a matching grant through SEMA and FEMA.

It would help pay for a proposed 12 million dollar project to line part of Cape La Croix Creek beginning over by south Sprigg.

You'll remember last spring floodwaters caused massive sink holes in that area plus rising waters poured into the quarry over at Buzzi Unicem.

It really affected the cement plant's business.

Lining the creek would help minimize future problems.

We're told it will probably take awhile before we learn if the grant's been approved.
