Paducah police warning of credit union 'phone scam'

PADUCAH, KY (KFVS) -

Paducah police are warning the public of a telephone scam making its way around the Paducah area.

Police say a credit union in Paducah told them of several reported customer calls where someone said they were from the credit union and requested account information.

The calls state the customer's debit account is about to be activated and asks for the 16-digit account number to be entered over the phone.

One such call was received by a Paducah police officer, and he says it is a scam.

Police say the telephone numbers that show up on the customers' caller ID are legitimate. An officer called the number that appeared on his caller ID, and it belonged to a temporary personnel staffing business in Texas. Another number that showed up on a second potential victim's caller ID belongs to a youth soccer club in Indiana.

Investigators say scammers have managed to hack into or piggyback on the legitimate telephone numbers, making the scammers more difficult to track down. Police have collected six different telephone numbers from which the scammers are using.

Anyone receiving a telephone call like this is reminded to never provide personal or account information to a telephone caller.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Paducah Police Department at (270) 444-8550 or Crime Stoppers at (270) 443-TELL.
