AURORA, KY (KFVS) -

A Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) geotechnical drilling crew has been retrieving information to help them design a replacement for the U.S. 68/ KY 80 Eggners Ferry Bridge on Kentucky Lake.

Over the last few weeks, a drilling rig has been on site to gather needed information about the surrounding area where the main supports for the bridge will be installed.

Mike McGregor, Project Development Engineer for KYTC District 1 and Project Manager for the Lake Bridges Project, says that the drilling crew is providing vital information that will aid in designing the piers for the main span of the new bridge. McGregor also says that samples of rock are being taken every few feet to check rock density which is needed to gather strength information that is critical in the design of the bridge's support system.

Darrin Beckett, a KYTC engineer who is supervising the drilling, says they have been working with the Coast Guard to accommodate river traffic. The hope is to phase the bridge construction so as to minimize shifts in river traffic in and around the construction site.

Construction on the bridge is expected to begin in early 2013 with the letting of an advance project, including widening of causeways and construction of an approach bridge, according to KYTC. Work on a replacement for the Eggners Ferry Bridge has a tentative start date of 2014 with construction on the new Lake Barkley Bridge following a year or two later. Construction on these new bridges is expected to take about four years to complete.
