Google set to announce KC plans

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Google is planning an announcement in Kansas City about its ultra-high-speed Internet network.

The search engine giant has been adding fiber lines in the two-state Kansas City region for several months after saying last year the metro area would be the first in the nation to get its broadband service.

Google says its "Fiber for Communities" service will deliver Internet access 100 times faster than broadband connections offered by telephone and cable companies.

Google officials gave no advance notice of what Thursday morning's announcement would involve.

But the company has said it hopes its Kansas City service will prod telecommunications and cable providers to upgrade their services in communities nationwide. The company has also said it hopes to offer the service at a competitive price.
