Attorney wants Kentucky juvenile records open

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – For decades, the court system for teenage offenders has been covered in secrecy, but that could soon change.

Wednesday, Jefferson County Attorney Mike O'Connell said he is proposing a law that would lift the veil of confidentiality in Kentucky juvenile courts.

O'Connell said it would let all of us know about kids who are committing crimes in our area and hold judges and attorneys accountable.

The county attorney's comments come after a Louisville teen faced contempt charges for tweeting the names of the teenagers who sexually assaulted her. The contempt charges have since been dropped.

39 other states have opened their juvenile courts to some degree. Only 11, including Kentucky, have not.
