Four shootings in Poplar Bluff, police say connected

POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KFVS) -

Poplar Bluff police said there have been four shootings within a few miles of each other in the city.

Poplar Bluff Police Patrolman Danny Hicks said they believe the shootings are each connected and a form of retaliation to the one before.

"It's two groups of individuals who have been targeting each other," said Hicks.

Hicks said it all started Tuesday, July 17th, when someone drove by 944 Harper Street around 10:00 PM and shot into a car parked outside. He said bullets also ricochet into a nearby home where a child was sleeping. No one was hurt.

Hicks said the second shooting was hours later at 3:00 AM on the morning of July 18th. He said someone shot five rounds into a home at 1020 Cole Avenue, which is just about a mile away from the first location. He said an 18-year-old girl was sleeping on a couch in the home, and a bullet hit a wall, then landed on the blanket next to the girl.

"The second incident is believed to be a retaliation to the first incident," said Hicks.

Hicks said each incident seems to be retaliation to the one before.

"They're targeted, these are not random shootings, these incidents have taken place for a reason, each reason has been retaliated, each event has been retaliated," said Hicks.

The third incident, Hicks said happened Saturday night July 21st around 9:00pm. He said someone in the yard fired two shotgun rounds into the living room of an upstairs apartment at 946 Spring St.

Hicks said the fourth shooting was hours later at 1:16am on July 22nd. He said someone parked in the alley behind the house at 703 Apple Street, walked into the backyard, and fired nine shots into the home. He said four or five people were in the house at the time, but no one was hurt.

Hicks said all the shootings have been within a few miles of each other.

He said it's not something people living in Poplar Bluff and that neighborhood need to worry about.

"There's two groups of individuals that are targeting each other, this is not a public safety concern or anyone outside of those groups, however they are very careless," said Hicks.

Hicks said they have suspects, and believe between six and seven people are involved.

"These two groups have been fighting ongoing for a few years," said Hicks. "There's been shootings in the past, it's slowed down."

Hicks said no one has been hurt in these shootings, but want to put it to an end.

"There's a good possibility that someone not involved will be injured, we don't want that to happen, we want to put a stop to it now," said Hicks."There have been some children exposed to these incidents which a concern for us, but luckily no one has been injured, and we'd like to get it stopped as soon as we can."

Hicks said they need more information since victims are not cooperating.

"There are several suspects identified, however the lack of cooperation from the victims is delaying the prosecution in the case," said Hicks.

He said if you know anything, call Poplar Bluff Police.
