First positive human West Nile case in Ill.

(KFVS) -

The first reported human case of West Nile virus in Illinois has been confirmed by the Cook County Health Department.

A woman in her 60s became ill earlier this month.

Illinois Department of Public Health Director Dr. LaMar Hasbrouck says the department is seeing a large increase in West Nile virus activity and that having a human case of the virus reported is a reminder that everyone needs to take precautions.

There were other West Nile virus positive specimens found earlier this year in Illinois including a bird and batches of mosquitos. As of now, there have been 27 counties reporting cases of specimens being infected with the virus.

The best ways to prevent being infected with the virus is to reduce exposure to mosquitos, use bug repellent and be sure to report signs of West Nile such as dead birds and areas of stagnant water.
