Jefferson County hit by several suspicious fires

Authorities in Jefferson County say there have been several suspicious fires lately.

According to Capt. Robert Beal of the Jefferson County Fire Protection District, last Wednesday night between 10-12, somebody went around Jefferson County just east of Bonnie and set some fires along the road.

Someone set four fires that night and had the Jefferson County Fire Department very busy putting these fires out.  There is no knowledge how someone is starting the fires, but they do know someone drove down the road and started it.

On early Friday morning at 12:20 there was another fire.  This time it involved an old barn on Adams Road.  The barn was very close to a house and was fully involved when the owner noticed it. The owner says the barn collapsed in front of him throwing a wall of heat towards him.

The Jefferson County Fire Protection District fought the fire and put it out while saving the house beside it.

The Jefferson Co. Fire Protection District says the four field fires Wednesday night and the barn fire early Friday are connected and suspicous.  They are looking for anyone that has any information about who may be responsible for setting these fires.

Beal says the fires are very dangerous because of the extreme dry conditions.

He says the fire fighters can't see the terrain very well when fighting these fires at night so they could potentially get hurt.

Beal says even though there is no county burn ban right now, he is asking the residents to not burn anything.

The field fires happened at a barn on  Adams Road, E. Saddle Club Road, Reardon Lane, and E. Franklin Road - all east of Bonnie, Illinois.
