JALC name new men's basketball coach

CARTERVILLE, IL (KFVS) -

John A. Logan College announced that Kyle Smithpeters will be the new head coach of the men's basketball team Tuesday afternoon.

Smithpeters joined elite company Tuesday when he became only the seventh head coach in John A. Logan College history.

A native of Harrisburg, Ill., Smithpeters played four years of college basketball which included time at Southeastern Illinois and Southern Illinois University.

Prior to filling the head coach position at John A. Logan, Smithpeters was an assistant coach at Missouri State University for one season.

"I came to the conclusion that a lot of guys never get the chance to be a head coach, and to become one at my age, back here close to home on top of everything else, I just couldn't pass it up," Smithpeters said according to a John A. Logan news release.

Smithpeters, 29 will take the place of recently retired Mark Imhoff who was the head coach for the last 17 seasons and who Smithpeters was an assistant coach too for four seasons before left to go to Missouri State University.

The Volunteers were 16-12 at the end of 2011-2012 basketball season.
