STE. GENEVIEVE COUNTY, MO (KFVS) - A construction worker was killed on Interstate 55 in Ste. Genevieve County.
The crash happened in a work zone at the 158 mile marker in the southbound lanes, according to the Missouri Highway Patrol. Traffic is moving on southbound I-55, but is reduced to one lane because of the work zone.
Larry J. Dye, 31, of Hannibal was killed, according to the Missouri Highway Patrol.
Missouri Highway Patrol Trooper Al Nothum says a Dye for a sub-contractor ran across the road to get a sign and was hit by a dump truck that was backing up. He died at the scene.
Nothum says Dye checked for traffic in one direction, but did not look to see the truck backing up.
The construction was in the southbound lanes in the passing lane next to the median. Cones were blocking the lane next to the median.
Nothum says the dump truck was traveling in that outside lane and started backing up when the worker went inside the cones.
The driver of the dump truck had minor injuries.
Highway Patrol set up a detour for a time, but southbound I-55 is back open to one lane.
No charges have been filed. The Missouri Highway Patrol is investigating.
