YourTurn - 7/1/12

Watch for YourTurn normally scheduled to air at the end of Heartland News at Noon on Mondays and Fridays, at the end of Heartland News at 10:00 on Saturday nights, and following The Breakfast Show on Sunday mornings.

This week's YourTurn comes from David Duty and it is very appropriate for the Fourth of July. He writes:
"During May of 1776, a meeting of the secret committee of the Continental Congress consisting of George Washington, Robert Morris, and George Ross, called on Betsy Ross to sew our first flag. On June 14th the Continental Congress adopted the 1st version of our stars and stripes. Ever since that day, the men and women of our great country have fought and died giving their lives to help protect our way of life and symbol of liberty; the American Flag.
As I have traveled across this great nation, that many have perished to protect, some of us have forgotten the importance of the treatment of that great symbol of our freedom. I have seen our great flag flying ragged and tattered, sometimes beyond recognition. Flown at night with no light and during inclement weather. Some people even wear the Flag as a piece of clothing. Section 8 of The Flag Code states: No disrespect shall be shown to the Flag of the United States of America. The Flag represents a living country and a living thing.
It is a universal custom of respect to display the Flag only from sunrise to sunset, and may be displayed 24hrs per day if properly illuminated. And only flown in inclement weather if an all weather Flag is displayed. The Flag should never be used as wearing apparel, bedding, or drapery. When the Flag is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, the Flag should be destroyed in a dignified manner; preferably by a ceremonial burning. All veteran organizations and Boy and Girl Scouts of America will have ceremonies appropriate for Flag disposal. The American Flag flies on the moon, sits atop Mount Everest, and is hurling through space. The Stars and Stripes is how America sings her name. When we view the Flag we think of Liberty, Freedom, Pride, and the terrible cost it takes to keep us free. Let us rededicate ourselves to more consistent and conscious treatment of our Flag, and honor this costly symbol of our freedom. May the wings of freedom never lose a feather, and may God bless America."
Well said David. Happy Independence Day.
