COPY-US man critical after chimp attack in S. Africa

JOHANNESBURG (AP) - A Texas graduate student is in critical condition in intensive care after he was bitten and dragged by chimpanzees at a sanctuary in South Africa.

An update Saturday from Mediclinic hospital in eastern South Africa said Andrew F. Oberle's condition has not changed since undergoing surgery Thursday, soon after two chimpanzees pulled him into their enclosure at the Jane Goodall Institute South Africa Chimpanzee Eden.

The sanctuary's manager, Eugene Cussons, said Saturday that the 26-year-old Oberle's mother was on her way to South Africa.

Oberle's mother, Mary Flint of St. Louis, says her son knew the risks of working with chimps and would not want them blamed for the attack.
