BENTON, IL (KFVS) -

A suspicious fire destroyed an apartment house in Benton, Ill. late Tuesday night.

The fire started about 11:15 p.m. Tuesday at 112 N. Election, according to the Benton Fire Department.

The fire chief says no one was living in the home legally. Firefighters think there may have been people squatting in the home. No utilities were running to the building.

The fire chief says the building burned three years ago. There were people living there at the time. He says that fire was purposely started.
