Attack submarine USS Illinois appears in Chicago

CHICAGO (AP) - The Secretary of the Navy and the governor of Illinois have attended the naming ceremony for the first modern Navy vessel to be named for the state.

Gov. Pat Quinn and Secretary Ray Mabus were at the USS Illinois ceremony Friday on Chicago's Navy Pier. The USS Illinois is a nuclear-powered, next-generation attack submarine designed for deep ocean warfare and shallow water operations.

It will join the Navy's fleet in 2015.

Mabus says he chose to name the submarine for Illinois because of the state's "longstanding relationship" with the state. Illinois is home to Naval Station Great Lakes, which is the Navy's only recruit training command in the country. About 37,000 sailors are trained there annually.
