FRUITLAND, MO (KFVS) -

Several chickens were killed and classic cars destroyed in a barn fire near Fruitland early Thursday morning.

The state fire marshal says 14 chickens, two 35-40 horsepower trackers, three classic trucks ('67, '71, '64), two ATVs, a model of a reproduction (classic car), '67 convertible Volkswagen, a 21 foot boat, a classic Mustang, and '57 Packard car were destroyed.

The fire happened at a horse barn/shed used for horses and classic cars, according to Harold Smith, the owner.

Smith says the horses escaped through a gate because two people who were driving by let them out, but all the chickens in the barn died.

"I most thankful no one was hurt," Smith said.

Small fires around the property are still going.

The state fire marshal says they do not know the cause of the fire because people rented units inside the barn. Electrical outlets were in each unit along with the outlets owners had.

Smith is expecting the insurance agents to stop by Thursday afternoon.
