Saturday is day to sweep the riverbanks

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - Thousands of volunteers will be combing riverbanks in Kentucky and elsewhere Saturday during the annual Ohio River Sweep and a similar event along the Kentucky River.

The Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation Commission in Cincinnati says there's at least one designated cleanup area for each county bordering the Ohio river, plus additional sites along tributaries. For information about participating, visit http://www.orsanco.org/locationscoordinators or call (800) 359-3977.

The Ohio River stretches from Pittsburgh to Cairo, Ill., and includes 1,962 miles of shoreline and many tributaries.

Also in Kentucky, the Kentucky River Authority holds an annual sweep in conjunction with ORSANCO. To participate, visit http://finance.ky.gov/offices/Pages/KentuckyRiverAuthority.aspx or contact Sue Ann Elliston at (859) 527-3356 or sue.elliston(at)ky.gov.
