MT. VERNON, IL (KFVS) - An apparent break-up gone badly landed a Mt. Vernon man behind bars.
Winston Bailey, 22, of Mt. Vernon was taken to the Jefferson County Jail on arson, aggravated discharge of a firearm and other charges.
According to Mt. Vernon police Chief Chris Mendenhall, it all started on June 3 when a woman told police her boyfriend tried to choke and punch her, and she broke up with him.
Four days later police say Bailey then went to the woman's mother's home with a gun allegedly fired several shots. The ex-girlfriend wasn't there and no one was hurt.
Bailey then allegedly went to the girlfriend's home on Oakland Avenue. She wasn't there either. Then witnesses told police they saw Bailey leaving the home as smoke was billowing out of it.
Mt. Vernon fire crews put the fire out. But there is damage to the home.
